This phaeophyte, which can easily be mistaken for an encrusting Lobophora species, is sometimes introduced via live rock into the aquarium where it grows well under the right circumstances. It is basically reef safe but is often considered ugly, especially since it has the potential to overgrow and outcompete desired coralline algae.
It is eaten by some tangs and rabbit fish as well as other species specialized in brown algae.
