Eelpout

General information

The family of eel moths (Zoarcidae) is a family of eel moth relatives. They also do not play a major role in reef aquaristics and are not specifically imported per se.

They occur from the Arctic to the Antarctic in all oceans of the world.
Most of the approx. 270 species live in the northern Pacific. There are also some endemic genera there.

Three species also live on the coasts of northern Europe, namely
the Sar's wolf eel (Lycenchelys sarsi)
the Vahl's eelpout (Lycodes vahli)
on the coasts of Norway and Iceland, the eelpout (Zoarces viviparus) also in the entire North Sea and Baltic Sea.

Three species of the genus Zoarces are ovoviviparous, the others oviparous. Some species engage in brood care.

A swim bladder is not present in mother eels. The animals reach a length of seven centimeters to about 1 meter.
