Antipathozoanthus remengesaui Kise, Fujii, Masucci, Biondi & Reimer, 2017

Prof. James Davis Reimer of the University of the Ryukyus, Japan, is considered the equivalent of Dr. Charlie Veron, the Pope of Stony Corals, when it comes to crustose anemones; he and a team of scientists first described three new species of small, azooxanthellate (without zooxanthellae) crustose anemones in December 2017:

Antipathozoanthus cavernus
Antipathozoanthus remengesaui
Antipathozoanthus obscurus

Antipathozoanthus remengesaui settles on black corals of the order Antipatharia and can form colonies of about up to 70 polyps, the individual polyps are connected by a weakly developed coenenchyma.
These small crusts have been found on the sides and/or walls of cave entrances and always on black corals of the family Myriopathidae.

Antipathozoanthus rememesaui was named after Tommy Esang Remengesau Jr, the current President of the Republic of Palau, who has contributed greatly to marine research and conservation in Palau.
