Info
Actinoscyphia plebeia is previously known only from Antarctica, Chile and the South Georgia Islands off Argentina.
The inclusion of this species in def South African fauna is based on several trawl records from both the west and south coasts of South Africa collected by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) during annual trawl surveys.
According to available records, it was first found on Agulhas Bank in 2007, but these specimens remained undetermined until this study.
Three specimens are deposited in the Iziko South African Museum (SAM)) and other records are based on trawl data without voucher specimens.
The range of this species extends from Kleinzee on the west coast to Agulhas Bank on the south coast.
Actinoscyphia plebeia can be distinguished from Actinostola capensis, another deep-sea species occurring in the same area off the coast of South Africa, by the maroon coloration of the tentacles and oral disc, the smooth column, and the slimy texture.
Synonyms:
Actinernus plebeius McMurrich, 1893
Actinernus plebejus McMurrich, 1893
Literature reference:
African Invertebrates 57(1): 15-37 doi: 10.3897/afrinvertebr.57.8459
