Info
Calcigorgia matua is another cold-water gorgonian whose range overlaps with Calcigorgia beringi in the western Bering Sea, but Calcigorgia matua also occurs in the Sea of Okhotsk, while Calcigorgia beringi is known only from the western Aleutian Islands.
Deep-sea gorgonians, such as those of the Calcigorgia family, are most often brought to the surface accidentally by trawls or examined and collected by deep-sea submarines.
The polyps of the gorgonian, which are responsible for catching marine snow and small zooplankton, are spaced apart, and irregularly arranged on the surface of the branch.
The species name "matua" is named after Matua Island (Kuril Islands, Sea of Okhotsk), which is closest to the locality, here the holotype was found.
