Info

The mussel Xenostrobus securis originates from New Zealand and Australia, but was widely spread by shipping (ballast water tanks and ship hulls), so that it has now arrived in the Mediterranean, North Sea and Baltic Sea.
Xenostrobus securis can adhere to rocks or even mangrove roots, settles on other mussel beds.
in Japan, the mussel was found exclusively between barnacle stocks of Fistulobalanus kondakovi (Tarasov and Zevina, 1957) and algal fronds of Gloiopeltis tenax.
It is interesting to note that the mussel, which is considered invasive, coexists with Musculista senhousia and Xenostrobus securis in Japan, as different microhabitat partitioning does not lead to food competition.
The mussel is extremely resistant to different salinities, coping with salinities ranging from 2 to 19 (Recruitment and population structure of the non-indigenous brackish-water.

The shell color is brown to dark brown, also almost black, and with a more or less slender outline in the shape typical of the species.
