Info

Stichopus noctivagus Cherbonnier, 1980

The English name "Night-wandering sea cucumber" which already makes clear that it is my nocturnal species, which hides during the day and is therefore often not noticed by divers. However, the sea cucumber can be easily observed and studied during night dives.

This nocturnal species inhabits areas of sandy boulder substrate in forereef slopes and underwater caves (Christmas Island, Australia), usually more commonly spotted in deeper waters.

In addition to its natural function of keeping seabeds free of detritus and other organic debris, this sea cucumber is also of great economic importance:Stichopus noctivagus is one of the most common sea cucumber species harvested in Indonesia.
The nutritional value of Stichopus noctivagus suggests that it could become a food supplement for humans in the future.

Color: beige brown to reddish, partially spotted.
