Macteola chinoi Stahlschmidt, Fraussen & Kilburn, 2012
A member of the family Mangeliidae. The family includes small to medium-sized snails without an operculum. Originally placed in the cone snail family (Famile Conidae), a revision took place in 2011 and Mangeliidae was elevated to the rank of its own family. The reason was the results of the study of anatomical and genetic features.
The Mangeliidae have separate sexes. The eggs are laid in egg capsules. After hatching, they go through a Trochophora larval stage and are part of the zooplankton as veliger larvae for another 6-7 weeks until metamorphosis into young snails occurs. Mangeliidae, as ground dwellers, feed predatorily on invertebrates, which they paralyze with their poisonous teeth.
Macteola chinoi is less than a centimeter tall and is known from the Mactan Island in the Philippines.
