Bohuslania matsmichaeli Korshunova, Lundin, Malmberg, Picton & Martynov, 2018
There are currently only a few known brackish water opisthobranches. Bohuslania matsmichaeli is the first brackish water nudibranch ever described with such an extremely limited known geographical range and apparently a strict adherence to salinity levels below 20 per mille. So far, the new taxon has only been found in a very limited area in Idefjord on the border of Sweden and Norway, but not in other seemingly suitable locations along the Swedish river and Norwegian coasts.
Bohuslania matsmichaeli is the only species in its genus.
Type locality: Idefjord, Bohuslän region, Sweden
The new genus "Bohuslania" was named after the Bohuslän region in southern Sweden, where the only locality of this new genus and species is in Idefjord.
Etymology: This species was named in honor of Mats Larsson and Michael Lundin, who were the first to discover this unique taxon.
The body is moderately broad, the rhinophores slightly longer than the mouth tentacles and smooth. The cerata are relatively long, thin and finger-shaped. The head is wide, semicircular, the mouth tentacles are located at the edges of the head. The foot is moderate, rounded at the front, no foot corners. The basic body color is semi-transparent sandy yellow with a brownish tint.
The digestive branches of the cerata are light yellow to light green-brown with small darker spots inside. Very fine, darker brown pigment spots are scattered across the back of the body. The ovaries and eggs are visible through the body wall as pale white spots with a faint pink color. Bright white small cnido sacs shine through the tips of the cerata.
Biology: Inhabits mixed environments with rocks and mud in shallow (5-7 m) brackish water (15-18 per thousand). The athecate hydroid Cordylophora caspia has been found in the area and may be a likely food source. The egg mass has the shape of a narrow whitish spiral cord with about three turns. The egg mass contains about 250 eggs.
The new slug is currently only known from the inner parts of the Idefjord in the Bohuslän region.
