Info
Xiphopenaeus kroyeri is a member of the family of Atherina and is fished commercially. It does not make sense to keep it in brackish or saltwater aquariums, as the large shrimp perceives all kinds of tankmates as potential food and hunts them.
Previously, Xiphopenaeus kroyeri was only known from the Caribbean and the Eastern Pacific, but in 2019 it was first found in the southeastern Mediterranean Sea off Egypt.
There, 447 shrimp were landed as so-called bycatch; it is assumed that the species was introduced through ballast water from ship tanks.
Due to the high population density it has reached at this non-native location, it is now considered part of the commercial shrimp catch in Egypt.
Synonyms:
Penaeus Kroyeri Heller, 1862 · unaccepted > superseded combination
Xiphopenaeus hartii Smith, 1869 · unaccepted > misspelling - incorrect subsequent spelling (misspelling of genus name)
Xiphopeneus Hartii Smith, 1869 · unaccepted > junior subjective synonym
