Odontonia rufopunctata is a commensal shrimp of the genus Odontonia. The genus currently includes nine described species, with some species only described in recent years. While most members live in association with sea squirts, the currently last described species Odontonia kerangcaris is known to live symbiotically with bivalves.
The type locality for the description of Odontonia rufopunctata is Sulawesi Sea/Makassar Strait. The specific name “rufopunctata ‘ refers to the ’red chromatophores covering the body”.
The small shrimp, only 0.3-0.4 cm in size, lives inside an unspecified yellow solitary species of sea squirt.
Sexual dimorphism: Males generally resemble females, are usually smaller, with relatively large chelae on the second pereiopods.
Color: The entire body is covered with very small red chromatophores and a few scattered smaller white chromatophores. There are more white chromatophores at the joints of the periopods and antennae than on the rest of the body. Eye stalk with few white chromatophores dorsally.
Etymology: The latin ‘rufopunctata’ refers to the red chromatophores covering the body.
