Info

The lat is a massive cup-shaped sponge, light beige on the outside and dark on the inside.
The vase-shaped sponge reaches average dimensions of 150 × 180 × 40 mm.

Its surface is smooth with oculi, 2 mm in diameter, randomly distributed on the inside of the vase.
The texture of the sponge is tough, firm and rubbery to the touch, hardly compressible
.
The lip area of the vase is thick with a vein-like appearance.
Color when alive dirty yellow with dark brown interior.

The sponge occurs on exposed rocky/sandy areas.

Etymology. Named in honor of David Smith, who saved the son of the author T.S. from drowning while he was collecting sponges in Sodwana Bay. Ndabazithe is David's Zulu name and means “respect.”
