Info
Apart from very little information, the first description of the species by Dr. Randall (Revision of the Indo-Pacific holocentrid fishes of the genus Myripristis, with descriptions of three new species) is unfortunately not freely accessible. We were able to find some information on page 185 of the first volume of the trilogy “Reef Fishes of the East Indies,” including the information that the species was described based on a single specimen from the waters around Lombok, Bali, Indonesia.
In contrast to FishBase, the well-known ichthyologists Gerry Allen and Mark Erdmann give a final size of 18.7 cm TL (FishBase 20.0 cm TL).
Although Myripristis aulacodes is classified as endemic to Indonesia, Gianemilio Rusconi was able to capture an individual on camera near Bodufolhudhoo, Alif Alif Atoll, Maldives.
We contacted Gianemilio Rusconi to ask him for the water depth at which he was able to photograph Myripristis aulacodes, as the water depth also allows for fairly accurate information about the water temperature.
Unfortunately, apart from its association with reefs, no further ecological information about the species is known.
Etymology:
The species name “aulacodes” comes from Greek and means “furrow,” referring to the narrow but deep mucous channels on the top of the soldierfish's head.
