Info
Crella (Grayella) papillata is a marine sponge with an attractive red coloration, other colors, such as orange, have not yet been described.
The consistency of the sea sponge is soft.
In the waters around New Caledonia, the sponge can be observed in lagoons with soft sea beds of gray, muddy shell sand and photographed at a depth that is easily accessible to divers.
In New Caledonia, the sponge has a high protection status:
Frequency: very rare species, only found on the west coast of New Caledonia.
The iNaturalist website contains sightings, some of which are of research quality, indicating occurrences in Hawaii, Indonesia, and the Mariana Islands.
We only have scientific evidence from New Caledonia and the Red Sea.
However, as free-swimming larvae of Crella (Grayella) papillata are carried by ocean currents and storms, we do not rule out further distribution.
Synonyms:
Crella papillata (Lévi, 1958) · alternative representation (subgenus assignment)
Grayella papillata Lévi, 1958 · unaccepted (genus transfer)
