Austrolethops wardi is a small goby with even smaller eyes and also an inhabitant of the burrows of the Thalassinid shrimp Neaxius acanthus.
Austrolethops wardi has a brownish-pink coloration with a dark brown first dorsal fin and pelvic fins; it is scaleless and has separate pelvic fins.
Named after:
Charles Melbourne Ward—known as Mel Ward—was an Australian stage performer, honorary zoologist, and collector. Several marine species are named wardi in his honor, including the northern wobbegong shark (Orectolobus wardi), Ward’s damsel (Pomacentrus wardi), and the small-eyed goby (Austrolethops wardi)
Etymology:
The species name “austrolethops” is composed of “Austro” = the south + the Greek word “lethe, -es” = the river Lethe (Lethes or), a river in Hades whose waters caused those who drank from it to forget the past + the Greek “ops” = appearance; 1567
