Captive breeding / propagation

The offspring of Dunckerocampus baldwini are possible. Unfortunately, the number of offspring is not large enough to cover the demand of the trade. If you are interested in Dunckerocampus baldwini, please ask your dealer for offspring. If you already own Dunckerocampus baldwini, try breeding yourself. This will help to improve the availability of offspring in the trade and to conserve natural stocks.

Info

Dunckerocampus baldwini

Adults usually occur in caves or among rocks at depths from 6 to 48 m

Observed cleaning a cardinal fish (Apogon evermanni) and a moray eel

Adults form pairs and usually swim along the bottom around large remote coral heads on mud slopes.
Ovoviviparous.
The male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail.
An active cleaner. Solitary or pairs around isolated coral patches on sand/mud slopes.

Synonym: Doryrhamphus baldwini (Herald & Randall, 1972)

Feeding intake.
The fish take a long time to eat at the beginning, before the food is taken up, a close inspection is carried out. After acclimatisation, the offered frozen food is eaten without problems. It should be noted that wild-caught fish behave differently than offspring when it comes to food intake. In the case of offspring, the size of the fish purchased also plays a role in the choice of food.
