Info
Pachycerianthus solitarius (Rapp, 1829)
At the beginning of their lives, cylinder roses build a tube into the sandy bottom into which they can retreat in case of danger. Planktivore, nocturnal cylinder rose, prefers detritus-rich soils near seagrasses of the species Zostera and Posidonia.
Pachycerianthus solitarius has a smooth, slender and cylindrical column and long tentacles on 3 different levels. This cylinder rose Pachycerianthus solitarius occurs at depths of 2 to about 50 meters, where it captures zooplankton with over 60 tentacles and elegantly guides it to the mouth. On the shore, it lives in muddy areas, in the open sea on sandy areas.
Color: brown or purple, with or without a striped pattern.
Despite its stinging tentacles, it has greedy predators such as the sea snails Coralliophila meyendorffii and Coralliophila lamellosa.
