Info

Ceratocarcinus longimanus White, 1847

The family Eumedonidae includes marine crabs that mainly live on sea urchins.Ceratocarcinus longimanus belongs to the family Eumedonidae, but is always found on sea pens. Sea pens (Crinoidea) belong to the phylum Echinodermata and are therefore related to sea urchins and starfish.

The type locality for the description of Ceratocarcinus longimanus is Malaysia.

The carapace is wider than long, hexagonal and flat. The color is white with conspicuous black lines and the two white horns gave the crab the name horned feather star crab.

Ceratocarcinus longimanus is an obligate commensal of comatulid crinoids and is usually solitary.

Found on the following feather stars, among others:
Comanthus parvicirrus, Zygometra sp. Comanthus gisleni, Comanthus parvicirrus, Comatula purpurea, Comatella stelligera, Comatella nigra, Oxycomanthus bennetti, Comanthina scheglii, Comanthus parvicirrus, Capillaster multiradiatus, Clarkcomanthus sp. Comaster tenella, Himerometra robustipinna.

According to WoRMS, the genus Ceratocarcinus currently contains only the following 3 described species:
Ceratocarcinus frontodentata (Chen & Dai in Shen, Dai & Chen, 1982)
Ceratocarcinus longimanus White, 1847
Ceratocarcinus trilobatus (Sakai, 1938)
