Info
Using the Pisces IV and Pisces V deep submersibles, a colony of a deep-water crustose anemone with more than 300 polyps was discovered at Keahole Point, Hawaiii
and around Laysan Island, Hawaiii, a colony with more than 400 polyps was discovered at a depth of 496 meters.
Other discoveries of the new crustose anemones were made at the Makapu'u coral reef off Oahu, Hawaiii.
Polyps, tentacles and the coenenchyma of this Zoanthus species are white, the white color and few branches are characteristic features of this species.
Etymology:
The genus name refers to HURL (Hawaiiian Undersea Research Laboratory), which has been instrumental in funding deep-sea coral research in the Hawaiiian archipelago and has provided its submersible Pisces.
Work with the agency has yielded many deep-sea coral species that are new to science. Due to budget constraints, HURL closed the year this zoanthid species was described, and this genus name is intended to honor HURL's important contribution to the discovery of deep-sea diversity around the Hawaiiian archipelago.
The suffix -zoanthus is a common suffix to generic names in the order, historically referring to the flower-like appearance of animal polyps.
Etymology:
This species name is dedicated to Dr. Frank Parrish for his contribution to the knowledge of the biology of the Hawaiiian "gold coral" Kulamanamana haumeaae and other valuable corals in the Hawaiiian archipelago.
