Goniobranchus leopardus (Rudman, 1987)
The Leopard nudibranch belongs to a group of similarly colored species. Other species include Hypselodoris tryoni, Goniobranchus kuniei and Goniobranchus geminus. They all have large purple or purple-brown spots or markings, usually edged in white, an often reticulated brownish background and a purple border.
Chromodoris geminus differs in that it has four bands of color around the mantle edge: an outermost white, then a translucent gray-violet, then white, then yellow. The other three have a distinct purple line at the edge, narrow in Goniobranchus leopardus and Hypselodoris tryoni, but wide in Goniobranchus kuniei.
Members of the genus are food specialists who feed on certain sponges.
