Bunodosoma capense (Lesson, 1830)
The sea anemone Bunodosoma capense lives along the coast of Namibia, around South Africa to KwaZulu-Natal, a province on the east coast of South Africa in the southwestern Indian Ocean.
It prefers shallow, sand-free reef zones where it usually sits on rocky ledges, but can often be found attached to shells and the sea squirt Pyura stolonifera.
The anemone is very variable in color, it can be white, maroon, pink, red, blue, purple or orange.
The body column of the sea anemone lined with a series of small, usually purple head-like structures that are smaller and darker in color than the rest of the body.
These knobs are not sticky, sand and debris do not adhere to the column of the knobbed sea anemone.
Scientists have reported the presence of cytolytic peptide and protein toxins in this species, but humans have not been harmed to date.
