Info
Bunodosoma californicum lives in the intertidal zone, on rocks, in tide pools and crevices, to which it attaches itself with its pedal disc, which can reach up to 1.3cm in diameter.
The sea anemone has a cylindrical body column 1.1cm high and 1.0cm in diameter, on which sits a mouth disc 1.3cm (fully expanded) and up to 108 tentacles up to 2.0cm in diameter.
The tentacles reach up to six mm in length, are sticky, smooth, all of similar length and arranged in 6 cycles around the oral disc.
In live sea anemones, the pedal disk is orange, the body column is greenish brown, and the distal vesicles are yellowish, the proximal vesicles are orange
The oral disc may be olive green or brown with whitish radial lines, the tentacles are olive and purple at the tips, with beige spots on the oral side.
Of the 14 known Bunodosoma species, only two occur in the eastern Pacific, Bunodosoma californicum and Bunodosoma grande.
Bunodosoma californicum does not possess zooxanthellae and therefore captures different zooplankton for their diet.
